Communications and Public Relations Manager

Location: Hybrid (Herndon, VA)

Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt

FCCLA is seeking a creative and strategic communications professional to lead the organization’s national written communications, media outreach, and public relations efforts. This full-time, hybrid position based in Herndon, VA plays a key role in shaping FCCLA’s public voice and elevating its visibility through consistent messaging, compelling storytelling, and thoughtful collaboration across departments.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer and editor who understands how to balance strategy with creativity. They are organized, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple deadlines across a variety of content types and platforms. They bring experience in media relations, communications planning, and content development, and know how to tailor messaging for different audiences while maintaining a cohesive brand voice. This individual works well both independently and as part of a team and is committed to producing polished, impactful communication that supports FCCLA’s mission and goals.

This position oversees FCCLA's newsletters, press releases, written marketing content, and website messaging to ensure clarity, alignment, and impact. This position works closely with the Graphic Design and Marketing Coordinator (who leads visual branding and social media) to ensure all messaging and design efforts are cohesive and audience-focused. This role also contributes to cross-departmental communication by ensuring that all written content supports FCCLA’s programs, partnerships, and national initiatives.

About the Role:

FCCLA seeks a dynamic Communications and Public Relations Manager to lead strategic communication initiatives, enhance brand visibility, and drive audience engagement through cohesive messaging across newsletters, press relations, marketing materials, and web content. This role collaborates closely with our Graphic Design and Marketing Coordinator, maintaining consistent branding and effective storytelling to amplify FCCLA's impact.

Key Responsibilities:

Communications (50%):

  • Oversee the creation and distribution of engaging newsletters, written marketing materials, and promotional content.
  • Manage website content, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with FCCLA’s brand.
  • Track and analyze communication metrics, providing strategic recommendations based on data insights.
  • Act as the primary overseer of FCCLA’s digital asset management system (Brandfolder).

Public Relations (50%):

  • Develop and execute media outreach strategies, cultivating relationships with key media contacts.
  • Generate press releases and proactively pitch stories to enhance FCCLA's media presence.
  • Coordinate media coverage for national events, managing press kits and facilitating media interactions.
  • Provide strategic communication support for the CEO's public engagements and speeches.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Monitor social media for emerging trends and potential story opportunities.
  • Respond promptly to communications inquiries and manage content updates proactively.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or related field.
  • Proven experience in communications, media relations, or marketing, ideally within nonprofit or educational settings.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and working collaboratively in fast-paced environments.

Travel: Approximately 1-5% travel required.
