Job Title: Linguist II

Location: Onsite (Burlingame, CA)

Department: Data & Linguistics Team

Job Summary:
The Linguist will play a crucial role in determining speech data needs and setting the strategic vision for data-based model and product improvements. You will be responsible for providing linguistic expertise, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring high-quality linguistic evaluations. The role will also involve working closely with external vendors, analyzing deliverables, and tracking progress to optimize workflows.

Job Responsibilities:

• Provide linguistic expertise in the areas of phonetics , phonology , lexicography , dialectology , and NLP .
• Collaborate with XFN (cross-functional) Partners to gather and prepare audio files for Text-to-Speech (TTS) human evaluations.
• Work closely with external vendors to track progress on evaluations, address issues or concerns, and ensure that deliverables meet the highest quality standards.
• Analyze received deliverables and provide actionable insights to XFN partners, addressing deep-dive requests from stakeholders regarding specific aspects of the results.
• Monitor and track the progress of annotation queues, ensuring timely completion and identifying bottlenecks or delays in the workflow.
• Address and resolve questions from annotators regarding guidelines to ensure clarity and consistency in annotation tasks.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Linguistic Expertise : Strong knowledge of phonetics , phonology , sociolinguistics , dialectology , and other areas of linguistics.
• Writing and Punctuation : Knowledge of prescriptive writing and punctuation conventions for at least one language.
• Communication : Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Spreadsheet Management : Proficient in managing and working with spreadsheets.
• Program Evaluation : Experienced in program management and evaluation.
• Language Proficiency : Native-level fluency in English .
• Guideline Maintenance : Proven experience in maintaining guidelines and resolving related questions.

Must-Have Skills:

• Arabic dialect experience : Ability to analyze and work with Arabic dialects.
• Technical Skills : Basic understanding of SQL .
• Project Management : Strong project management and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Language Familiarity : Familiarity with additional languages like French , Italian , German , or Spanish (FIGS) .
• Data Analysis : Basic data analysis skills for evaluating linguistic data.
• Linguistic Knowledge : Ability to understand and troubleshoot errors in linguistic data.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Linguistics , Language Technologies , Computational Linguistics , Speech Science , or a related field.
• 2+ years of relevant experience in linguistics, speech science, or a related domain.
