POSITION SUMMARY:

Social/Emotional Coach (SEC) is responsible for assessing students with behavioral issues, collecting data on students, working with parents, teachers, family advocates, coaches, mental health partners, and special education partners to devise or support an existing behavior plan or strategies. SEC observes teacher and child interactions to evaluate effectiveness of the behavioral plan. SEC provides coaching to teachers to aid in the implementation of the behavior plans and support the use of Positive Behavior Support and Conscious Discipline techniques in the classroom. SEC provides coaching and support to parents in implementing Positive Behavior Support and Conscious Discipline techniques. SEC document results of observations collect data and enter data to show progress towards meeting established social emotional goals which lead to school readiness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Community & Collaboration

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with area mental health providers to support the implementation of mental health programming.
  • Collaborate with local community agencies and providers to ensure comprehensive services that meet family needs; promote family and community volunteer involvement.
  • Advocate for SEK-CAP within the community and support the agencys mission, values, and strategic goals.
  • Coordinate meetings and conferences with teaching staff, parents, family advocates, and contracted providers alongside the Lead Social/Emotional Coach and Mental Health Manager.

Classroom Support & Coaching

  • Observe teacher-child interactions regularly to provide targeted support.
  • Provide coaching to teaching staff using the Teacher-Child Interaction Therapy (TCIT) model.
  • Offer coaching and support to families using the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) model.
  • Apply Positive Behavior Support and Conscious Discipline strategies to enhance children's social-emotional skills and model them to families.
  • Discuss mental health consultant notes in Apricot with teaching staff and the Lead Instructional Coach to inform classroom practices.

Child Development & Behavior Interventions

  • Maintain knowledge of early childhood development theories and best practices.
  • Support staff in developing individualized strategies and behavior support plans in collaboration with coaching leads.
  • Collect and analyze data on those strategies to assess and adjust their effectiveness.
  • Identify and help eliminate barriers that hinder parents' ability to serve as their child's first teacher.
  • Use ACEs and PCEs frameworks to inform individualized intervention planning.

Special Education & Mental Health Services

  • Maintain understanding of policies and procedures related to mental health referrals and special education implementation.
  • Provide individualized training and guidance to ensure staff competency in these service areas.
  • Track and report data on the provision and outcomes of mental health and special education services.
  • Administer and interpret the Ages & Stages Questionnaire: Social/Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2).

Family Engagement & Communication

  • Foster high-quality parent engagement through planned activities, parent meetings, drop-off/pick-up moments, teachable interactions, and other involvement opportunities.
  • Communicate professionally, respectfully, and effectively with children, families, co-workers, partners, and volunteersboth verbally and in writing.

Data Management & Administrative Duties

  • Submit monthly reports, complete data entry accurately by assigned deadlines, and update records as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work and learning environment, including shared resources and assessment tools.
  • Demonstrate consistent professional behavior by adhering to schedules, directives, and agency policies.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and policies, including Head Start Performance Standards, CACFP, the Head Start Act, SEK-CAP procedures, and Kansas childcare licensing.
  • Uphold all confidentiality and privacy expectations regarding client and staff information.
  • Report any suspected child abuse or neglect as a mandated reporter under Early Head Start/Head Start standards.

Other Duties

  • Attend all required in-service training, staff meetings, and professional development sessions.
  • Work flexible hours to meet program or staff needs.
  • Support management directives and organizational decisions through words and actions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

  • Basic computer skills and electronic equipment skills.
  • Basic operations skills of general office equipment such as photocopiers, faxes, and phone system.
  • Ability to get along with diverse personalities; tactful; mature, and flexible.
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public and to communicate effectively and clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Resourceful and well-organized self-starter, needing minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with co-workers, community partners, and customers.
  • Ability to problem solve.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of bachelors degree Special Education or Psychology, Master's degree Psychology preferred.
  • A minimum of two years experience working in the field of Special Education or Mental Health is preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience working with Behavior Management/Early Childhood education is preferred.
  • Successfully complete a physical exam and TB skin test before beginning employment and every three years thereafter, as required.
  • Obtain a First Aid card and CPR certification.
  • Possess current, valid driver's license and meet agency insurance underwriting guidelines.
  • Submit to and pass standard criminal background check.
  • Submit to and pass standard drug screen test.
